"What Not to Wear" features Breast Cancer Survivor Sara Jordan: Updated

You don't see too many features in fashion magazines about adjusting to life after breast cancer surgery, but a March episode of "What Not to Wear" featured Sara Jordan, a breast cancer survivor and American Cancer Society volunteer. The Pennsylvania mom chose to have a double mastectomy with no reconstruction and on the show wore no prosthesis. Another challenge, after treatment she lost 91 pounds.

I will say they did a really good job of finding clothes that make her look curvy, especially the print blouses. They also took a big risk giving her a short red pixie cut, but I thought it looked nice, especially after she put on her new makeup and outfits. (I used to have short red hair so I am partial!)

The show also featured quite a few ads for ACS, and it appears the hosts are also involved in the organization. All in all it was a good show, and will probably be quite an inspiration for other new survivors who feel like it's time for a new look.

I decided to write a new post on this because we now have a link to Discovery's blog which features her shopping lists.

In addition there is a q&a with host Stacy London about making the episode.

Comment from original post: I would love to watch this show. My sister just had a double Mastectomy and no reconstruction as well. She's down 20 pounds and it's only been a lil over a month since her surgery. She's so depressed. I think this show would help her and many other like her. Please let me know if you find a link. I've watched every episode of What Not to Wear since the beginning of the show.

And, my DVR didn't record this one. I have no clue why - I only hope it was an oops and it'll appear again in my now playing list. Being a uniboober isn't easy for clothing choices either.

  4. Fortunately, I caught it later. I chose reconstruction (and am in the process) but I found this survivor very brave, and kudos to Stacy and Clinton for taking on a non-traditional subject.

I have just finished watching this episode, i have watched many episodes. This episode was the best one ever!! It brought tears to my eyes, made me sad,but only to be overcome by an immense amount of joy, happiness, enlightenment!SARAH IS AN AMAZING WOMAN AND SO STRONG AND SHE DESERVES ALL THE BEST AND MORE AND I KNEW SHE COULD DO IT. I JUST WASN"T EXPECTING HER TO DO SOOO WELL!!!SHE ROCKED THIS SHOW, THE NEW LOKK MAKES HER LOOK LIKE WAYYYYY YOUNGER!!!!AND ENHANCES HER BEAUTIFUL FACE/SKIN/CHEEKBONES/EYES,
AND EVERY OUTFIT IS AMAZING!! by far the most emotionally satisfying episode I have seen. It makes me feel good to know IT CAN WORK IF YOU WORK IT!
I feel so good after watching this and it gets me inspired to just get up and do things, be more positive and make everyone around me feel good and worthy, while at the same time letting myself shine as well.

I am also very flat chested and always try to make them look bigger somehow, but you have made me realize that I don't need to do that to feel good and confident, and actually if I do keep trying to make them seem bigger than they actually are, i become more of a shallow, non-confident, breakable person. We strive to be "perfect" but perfect doesn't mean conforming to what society today would "generally" see as beautiful..very slim figure, good sized breasts, nice but, long legs, etc. I feel like I have grown a little as well just in this past hour.lol.
    Thank-you Sarah!:)

Heres a beautiful quote I just found:)
"Without culture, and the relative freedom it implies, society, even when perfect, is but a jungle. This is why any authentic creation is a gift to the future."
    Albert Camus

(p.s I have never commented on a show, but I immediately felt like I had to find a blog or review and let Sarah know!!let everyone know...she will probably never see this but I needed to voice my strong opinion.!! unfortunately i couldn't find a comment page or anything on the TLC website, which would have been nice.)
